Feeling Overwhelmed by Your Goals? Try This Simple Mindset Shift

Like many of you I’m sure, I’ve been bombarded by social media posts urging me to set ambitious goals and craft grand plans for the year ahead. And while I do think a bit of this can be helpful, it’s so easy to fall into the trap of focusing on how far you have to go—so much so that you might feel like you’ll never quite ‘get there.’
When I was reflecting on this, I remembered a piece of advice I was given years ago that’s stuck with me ever since. It’s not directly about EFT Tapping, but it’s a bit of general life wisdom I try to revisit as often as I can!

About a decade ago, I took a Spanish evening class. One week, I found myself sitting around a table with my classmates, collectively moaning about how hard it was to learn the language. We complained that we’d never get anywhere, that it all felt a bit pointless.
Our teacher overheard us and stopped the class. What followed was one of the simplest but most valuable pieces of advice I’ve ever received.

She told us that every year she teaches Spanish to people from all walks of life. No matter their background, nearly everyone hits a point where they feel exactly as we did; frustrated, stuck, and convinced they’ll never reach their goals.
She explained the flaw in our thinking. We were so focused on comparing where we were at that moment to where we wanted to be—the ‘end goal’—that we’d completely forgotten where we started.
For most of us, our starting point was a place where we didn’t speak a single word of Spanish. Yet here we were, sitting in a classroom, holding conversations, and understanding this piece of advice she was giving us - in Spanish! Whilst we were far from fluent, we’d already come a long way.
This is a simple reframe but it can be really powerful.

So the next time you feel stuck or overwhelmed, try looking back at where you began. Really think about the steps you’ve already taken, the progress you’ve already made, and the effort you’ve already put in to get to where you are today.
It’s so easy to focus on how far you still have to go, but don’t forget to celebrate how far you’ve already come. There are three points to keep in mind – where you are today, where you want to be…and the one we tend to forget; where we began.
Take a moment to acknowledge your progress—no matter how modest it might seem. Let that sense of accomplishment remind you of your strength and determination and use it as fuel to keep moving toward your goals.
